FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
Smarter estates, safer patients:
How data is transforming the NHS
from the plant room up
A Quiet Revolution at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
In today’s complex and diverse
healthcare environments,
operational e昀昀ectiveness is not
just a goal; it is a necessity.
From acute primary care to
major trauma services, the daily
functioning of thousands of
clinical and microbiological assets
underpins patient care and safety.
As healthcare systems need
to be increasingly e昀케cient
and sustainable, gaining a
comprehensive, integrated and
clear picture of asset performance
has become essential.
This challenge re昀氀ects a
broader issue across large
healthcare facilities. Assets
ranging from air handling units
to energy-intensive equipment
in clinical labs need to work in
30
harmony. However, without a
uni昀椀ed view, managing these
systems holistically can be an
uphill battle.
At Manchester University NHS
Foundation Trust (MFT), a quiet
digital revolution is underway
– one that’s helping engineers
prevent breakdowns before they
happen, reduce carbon emissions,
and keep critical clinical spaces
running smoothly.
The catalyst? A partnership
between Sodexo and Xempla,
a decision automation platform
that’s changing the way estates
are managed for Sodexo’s clients
across the NHS.
Faced with fragmented
data and rising pressures on
infrastructure, a detailed business
GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC SECTOR JOURNAL SUMMER 2025
case was developed, focused
on improving asset uptime and
aligning with both Sodexo’s and
MFT’s sustainability objectives.
The project was able to secure
investment by evidencing longterm ROI, improved lifecycle
outcomes and patient-centred
bene昀椀ts.
After evaluating multiple market
solutions, Sodexo selected
Xempla, a decision automation
platform specialising in asset
performance management
to help shift from reactive to
predictive maintenance. Xempla’s
advanced capabilities—ranging
from anomaly detection to
predictive analytics—have
empowered Sodexo’s Operations
& Maintenance teams to shift from
reactive to predictive operations.
Due to the complexity of the
asset management within MFT,
Sodexo knew a solution needed
to be both robust and adaptable.
What’s more, the 昀椀nal solution
needed to directly support
core strategic priorities for both
organisations:
- For MFT: enabling uninterrupted
patient care, progressing
towards Net Zero and
increasing infrastructure
resilience.
- For Sodexo: enhancing
operational e昀케ciency, delivering
technology enabled solutions
and reducing Scope 3 carbon
emissions as part of its 2040
Net Zero roadmap.
